Short answer

FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY means the TRON network ran out of Energy while executing the USDT contract, so the transfer was reverted but the TRX already burned is not refunded. To fix it, check whether the recipient already holds USDT (about 65,000 Energy) or not (about 131,000), rent that much Energy to your address before sending, and retry the transfer.

You send USDT on TRON, your wallet shows an error, and TronScan marks the transaction as FAILED – OUT OF ENERGY. Your USDT is still there, but some TRX was deducted anyway. Here is why that happens and how to avoid it next time.

What OUT OF ENERGY means

A USDT TRC-20 transfer is not a simple coin transfer — it is a call to the token's smart contract. To execute a contract, the TRON network consumes a resource called Energy. Accounts get no free Energy, unlike Bandwidth, of which the network grants about 600 units per day.
If there is no Energy on the address, the network covers the shortfall by burning TRX. But it can only burn up to the transaction's fee limit and whatever is on your balance. When that is not enough, contract execution stops halfway and the transaction gets the OUT OF ENERGY status.

Why TRX was deducted even though the transfer failed

The network has already done part of the work: it verified the signature, included the transaction in a block and started executing the contract. The resources spent on that are not returned. So a failed transaction still costs money, with nothing to show for it.
A typical case: the address held about 6 TRX, the network burned all of it for roughly 60,000 units of Energy, but the transfer needed about 65,000. A few thousand units short — and all 6 TRX are gone.
The network never refunds burned TRX. Neither your wallet nor an Energy rental service can compensate it — which is why you need Energy before you send the transfer.

The main causes of the error

  1. No Energy on the address and too little TRX. The most common case: you have USDT but only a couple of TRX.
  2. The recipient is a new address or an exchange. Sending to an address that holds no USDT yet needs about 131,000 Energy instead of 65,000. Energy sized for a regular transfer is not enough.
  3. The fee limit is too low. Some wallets and scripts set a burn limit below the actual cost.
  4. The rental expired before the transfer. Energy was reclaimed before your transaction reached a block, so it looks stuck.

What a transfer costs without Energy

At the current network price of about 100 sun per unit of Energy (1 TRX = 1,000,000 sun):
RecipientEnergyTRX burned (approx.)
Already holds USDT~65,000~6.85 TRX
New address or exchange~131,000~13.35 TRX
The amount does not affect the cost: sending 1 USDT and 10,000 USDT costs the same.

How to fix it, step by step

  1. Check the recipient address on TronScan. If it already holds USDT, you need about 65,000 Energy. If not, or if it is an exchange, you need about 131,000.
  2. Get Energy in advance. Rent the amount you need for 15 minutes or 1 hour. The Energy is delegated to your address within seconds.
  3. Make sure the Energy has arrived. Your wallet or the Resources tab on TronScan should show the right amount.
  4. Keep a little TRX for Bandwidth. If you have used up the daily free allowance, a transfer needs about 0.35 TRX. Some wallets, such as Trust Wallet, also require a minimum TRX balance.
  5. Send the USDT again. This time the network will use the Energy on your address instead of burning TRX.

How to avoid the error in future

  • Buy Energy before the transfer, not after a failed attempt.
  • Leave a margin for new addresses and exchanges — 131,000 Energy.
  • For regular transfers, set up auto top-up so Energy is bought automatically when it drops below a threshold.
  • For businesses and hot wallets, keep a constant Energy reserve so parallel transactions do not fail.

Summary

OUT OF ENERGY means the network did not have enough resources to execute the USDT contract. The TRX you already spent will not come back, but you can make the retry cheaper: rent Energy to your address, confirm it has arrived and send the USDT again.
